1. Dangal (2016)
The real story of Phogat sisters becoming India’s first world-class female wrestlers received AACTA Awards (2017), Douban Film Awards (2017) and Berlin International Film Awards (2018). Produced by Aamir Khan, it starts Aamir Khan as Mahavir Singh Phogat and Fatima Sana Shaikh and Zaira Wasim as young Phogat sisters.
2. Parched (2015)
A heart touching story from parched lands of Rajasthan, the movie has four female characters displaying the agony women in rural Rajasthan has to face due to social traditions. It won the Best Screenplay award in 10th Asia Pacific Screen Awards in (2016).The movie has a widow Rani played by Tannishtha Chatterjee living with her aging mother-in-law and a recluse teenage son who she marries off due after giving a hefty sum to bride’s family. Janki (Lehar Khan), the bride, is the second character in the movie.Lajjo (Radhika Apte), wife of an alcoholic husband. The third woman, she’s facing an abusive marriage and also the stigma of being infertile. Bijli (Surveen Chawla) is the fourth woman. She’s an erotic dancer and a sex worker.
3. Masaan (2015)
There are few Bollywood celebrities that made their marks in their debut movies like Richa Chadha did in Masaan. In Masaan, Richa essayed role of a brave girl Devi. She’s caught making love with her boyfriend in a hotel but her friend suicides by locking him in the bathroom. Devi was filmed half naked by the police inspector who raided the hotel on the tip-off of the hotel owner. The cop blackmails Devi’s father Vidydhar to 3 lakhs for deleting the video of half-naked Devi. There is another story of a poor boy Deepak Kumar (Vicky Kaushal). The film concludes with Devi and Deepak meeting on the banks of Ganga.
4. The Lunchbox (2014)
A light romantic comedy, the movie was once considered for Oscar but its Oscar nomination remained a controversy. It is a story of a middle class housewife struggling with her daily chores. Ila (Nimrat Kaur) prepares delicious lunch for her husband hoping to win her love. But the lunch is accidentally delivered to Saajan Fernandes (Iffran Khan). While Ila is married and mother of a daughter, Saajan is a widower with no progeny. Also he is much older than Ila. The accidental delivery of the lunchbox continues and both and Saajan and Ila develop a good chemistry. They became friends and finally decide to live together at a distant place.
