Plot: The story goes back to 1960s, Dashrath Manjhi (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) along with his family use to live in a village Gehlaur near Gaya, Bihar, India. The was no medical facility available in the village and to gain access to any medical facility villagers had to travel through a rocky mountain to the nearest town Wazirganj. Manjhi’s wife Phaguniya Devi (Radhika Apte) was trying to cross the mountain where she fell and died.
This personal tragedy made Manjhi decide that he will carve a road through the mountain. He was a common villager and started with his chisel and hammer. Out of common sense, people started calling him foolish but it made his determination stronger. After 22 years of gruelling labour and persistence, Manjhi created a 360 feet long, 25 feet deep and 30 feet wide way.
On 17/08/07, Manjhi passed away at the age of 73 while struggling from gall bladder cancer in All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi. Government of Bihar gave him a state funeral. Four years after Manjhi’s death in 2011 government finally constructed a proper metalled road in the village.
Critic’s Review: Most of the critics appreciated the Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s and Radhika Apte’s acting. However, the combination of reality and fiction, dramatic background music makes the film imposed and less impactful. It could have received better critic’s review if kept closer to reality and subject. Mostl of the critique’s given it a 3 star.
Cast and Direction: Director Ketan Mehta has received mixed reviews as per the critique’s the movie was success only in parts. Some parts of the movie are considered over dramatic and at some parts it becomes monotonous. Whole cast has been appreciated for the amazing performance.
Why will you watch: You may want to watch it for Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s brilliant acting. Some good cinematic experience and for the inspiring story of Dashrath Manjhi.
