Could Muhammad Azharuddin make a comeback with his biopic?
Azhar reflects true life of Muhammad Azharuddin. The movie shows making of Muhammad Azharuddin as one of the finest batsmen in the history of Indian cricket. It also shows his turbulent married life and love affair with an actress and also the movie throws light on the match-fixing issue that banned Muhammad Azharuddin from playing cricket for life and shattering of his dream of playing 100 tests for India.
Response for the movie is mixed as everyone is looking at the movie from his knowledge and understanding of cricket, match-fixing and involvement of Muhammad Azharuddin in match-fixing. The scandal broke in 2000 and the same year ICC and BCCI imposed a lifetime ban on Azhar but BCCI lifted the ban in the year 2006 and in 2011, a Divisional Bench of Andhra Pradesh High Court dismissed the ban. It was a long drawn legal battle for Muhammad Azharuddin.
Watching Azhar is like reading a biography. Those, who don’t know Muhammad Azharuddin, can see his life and the struggle he fought with ICC, BCCI and then the court to prove his innocence. He is known by one name that is Azhar and the world knows him as a batsman. He made three centuries in consecution in his first three test matches. He was also named Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1991, when he scored 199 against Sri Lanka.
His involvement in match-fixing was unacceptable to the Indian fraternity but he was made an accused and he had to pay the price for that. The film highlights his contribution to Indian cricket and also sheds light on the match-fixing saga that was the turning point in the life of Muhammad Azaharuddin. Emraan Hashmi is playing Muhammad Azharuddin but he doesn’t fit into the larger than life figure of Azhar as the fans of the great cricketer calls him.
