Batman: The Killing Joke: What is upsetting sentiments of the people in the movie?

Batman: The Killing Joke is an animated superhero film based on DC Comics character Batman. It is the twenty-sixth movie in the series of DC Universe Animated Original Movies. The movie is also remotely associated with the graphic novel by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland. It is produced by Warner Bros. Animation and the distribution rights are with Warner Bros. Pictures.

The story starts with Batgirl overseeing Batman debriefed by Commissioner James Gordon for a failed attempt to save a robbery bid by Batgirl. But she is able to catch a culprit with the help of Batman. She has an ego problem due to which she couldn’t understand feelings of Batman towards her. Meanwhile the leader of the robbery team Fran starts targeting Batgirl with threat messages and then goes ahead to kill her with attacks by his men.

Batman saves Batgirl from Franz and also takes her off the case. They become friends. The movie has a second story that is the The Joker. He is an insane killer. Batman finds his involvement while investigating a murder scene and becomes cautious about his presence. Batman knows how dreading the Joker is. The Joker successfully kidnaps Barbara the Batgirl and cripples her. But he doesn’t stop here as crippling Barbara is part of his plan to torture Gordon, Barbara’s father and also the commissioner. Both the father and daughter are in the captivity of the Joker. He strips crippled Barbara and shows her pictures to Gordon to torture the commissioner.

Batman comes to rescue Barbara and Gordon. The Joker is defeated and he escapes to his funhouse. Gordon asks Batman to follow Joker. Batman clears all the obstacles thrown by Joker and finally captures him with his wit and sane mind. The dialogue between the Joker and Batman is worth watching and understanding. Joker says that the world is a big joke and that one bad day is enough to make a sane person insane.

The film is special in many ways. Batman and Batgirl are featured in contrasting positions and also the Batgirl is crippled and stripped by the Joker. Some critics have raised questions on use of woman for torturing. Also the thoughts of Joker are like thoughtful ideas.

Why watch the movie?

If you are fan of DC Comics and have read Batman then you will certainly like the movie. It has Batgirl in negative role but finally she is able to keep a tab over her ego. The Joker is an insane killer looks more intelligent than average persons. He has a message to give that is the world is nothing but a big joke. The film is action packed and shows reach and expansion of criminals.


• Mark Hamill who gave voice to the Joker in Batman: Arkham Knight (2015) declined voicing Joker due to the strain it put on his vocal cords

• The movie was originally made for video but producers decided to make it a film after getting a huge response from the audiences

• Production of the movie was cancelled in 2009 after failure of the Watchmen at box office

• The movie gives more space to Batgirl than the novel the movie is based on
