Rustom: Second move on the real life story of K.M. Nanavati
Rustom is based on real story of a decorated naval officer K.M. Nanavati. The story revolves around a murder committed by the officer. It is an interesting case that changed the face of Indian judicial system forever. The officer committed the murder and also confessed to the crime in court. He sentenced to life imprisonment but later released due to public support to the officer.
Naval officer Kawas Manekshaw Nanavati was a happy man with a family of five including his wife Sylvia and three children. Nanavati had to remain out of home due to his duty and in the meantime, his wife developed close relations with his friend Prem Bhagwandad Ahuja. She wanted to materialize her relationship with Prem and latter also agreed to marry her but later distracted. Sylvia came to know about love affairs of Prem Ahuja and became depressed.
One day, on coming back home from duty, Nanavati saw his wife depressed and questioned her. She broke down and confessed to having a love affair with Prem Ahuja. Nanavati felt betrayed but controlled his emotions. He took his service revolver and went to the house of Prem Bhagwandas Ahuja. Whether he intended to murder Ahuja isn’t clear but he killed Ajuja. He asked about their love affair and on knowing that Prem won’t accept Sylvia and her children, he killed Ahuja in a fit of rage.
The case decided in the favor of Nanavati at a session court but in a retrial at Bombay High Court, Nanavati was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. Supreme Court too upheld the decision and sentenced Nanavati to life imprisonment. But media and public came in support of Nanavati. Parsi community also stood behind Nanavati. Prem’s sister pardoned Nanavati in public pressure. Government released him after three years.
On his release, Nanavati took his family to Canada and settle there. He died in 2003. Rustom is a real story of the KM Nanavati vs. State of Maharashtra. It is a popular case that shook the entire country. Nanavati was a murderer but he garnered public support and got freedom due to the support he got from the Indian media and public.
